The movie clip of Prince on a piano playing a deconstructed version of “Purple Rain” has always been a fan favorite.
A simple piano version of “Purple Rain” is also the last song Prince played live as the closing number for his April 14, 2016 concert at the Fox Theater in Atlanta. He died a week later.
Most fans try not to imagine him being physically gone because he lives on through his music and the many lives he touched. Die-hard fans continue to honor his work and work to create a new generations of fans. If you’re reading this you are probably one of them.

Perhaps it has a lot to do with something Prince was outrageously great at doing. He had a way of using each song to show the listener themselves. Many Prince tracks & lyrics relate everything to the common human experience. The scenes in the movie leading up to the song are very dramatic.
“The Kid” was grappling with his father’s attempted suicide which had happened less than 24-hours before his band had to play well enough to keep from being deleted from the club line-up. “The Kid” also had worries about his parents and his own tendencies towards domestic violence. His potential girlfriend had also just left him in dramatic fashion.
In my opinion, the song “Purple Rain” is emotional because people see themselves in the lyrics; “I never meant to cause you any trouble, I never meant to cause you any pain.” Everyone at some point and time in their lives has had a reason to utter those humble words. Whether the words come out as eloquently as a Prince lyric is questionable but the sentiment is there. It seems “The Kid” turned the pain, worry, and heartbreak into a milkshake of musical therapy and called it”Purple Rain.”
Genius describes the events leading up to the title track as:
“Prince is trying to learn how to become a responsible boyfriend, musician, and leader. But he is also coming to the realization that his father had the same dream and failed – and instead became a bitter, violent wreck. Prince realizes that he still loves his father, despite all the pain he caused the family, and that the secret is believing in yourself rather than demanding that others believe in you.”
It’s difficult to motivate oneself to turn tragedy into triumph on a daily basis. The audience could see that “The Kid” was flawed and displayed heavy influences from his father who seemed to be mentally disturbed. But most audiences love an underdog story and everyone was pulling for “The Kid” to turn things around. The raw emotion from the song and the movie stir up common feelings. Sometimes in life, the despair digs down so deep it seems there’s no place to go but up. If everyone could channel negative emotions into our own sweet & delicious “Purple Rain,” perhaps we could always live in a world of never-ending happiness.

Prince was a musical genius and I miss him so much OMG!
I can’t even explain why Purple Rain makes me cry – -it just does. And it takes on another meaning now that he’s gone.
Purple Rain is the best. I agree the lyrics probably have a link to something personal.
